First Thread

first thread

So I began to thread the yarn that was already on the beam, this had been there for more than 10 years in the attic.

Those of you with a keen eye will spot that I had yet to solve the replacement surface for the take-up roller. The metal zester like material had fallen to bits the second I had lifted the roller. A friend suggested a rough sandpaper, but that would have to wait for a trip to Inverness. A rough cloth sander on a roll, was just the ticket to replace the metal gripper as it could be wound spiral fashion, with a little PVA glue and nailed on as the gripper had been.

Once threaded I gave it a try, the thread breaker ran from side ... sorry the shuttle would go from side to side, jam break threads, stick, move, proving that all the parts where there but not necessarily in good working order.

I removed the old yarn in the belief that it's age made it weak (kinda half right). And decided that it was now worth giving all the moving parts a good clean.

Much oil and WD40 later along with a bucket of elbow grease I was ready to try again.

On the recommendation of a friend I headed for Carloway Mill to get something to have a go with.
