Shuttles fly

tempers follow....

Now the loom is threaded and the pirn winder is setup to actually wind a pirn the right shape to fit the shuttle, it was time to try a bit of weaving.

Every third pass of the shuttle, something would catch, warps would break, frustration would build. Then mother came to have a look and watch a "demo". She had seen weaving over on the West side, at the black houses. She noticed that it sounded fast. so I slowed down a bit, this improved it a bit so...

After much struggling a re-read of the Tweed Authority handbook, and some careful measuring it appeared my tappets weren't on time. some careful adjustment and try again.

The combination of your tappets being synchronised and your mother telling you to slow down, and a little judicious WD40 spraying, all add up to some woven cloth. Note that the picture is very close up, so you can only see some of the variations in picks per inch.

Practice, adjustment, more practice and so on until after awhile things started to work together.

Then there was the revolving box to get working.......

  2. And it's all your fault Huw, I've still got the spinning wheel ! In fact the arty piece on the front, the brown threads where from that wheel.
